A guide to help you survive your online studies.
I had so many grand plans for my blog, a few I have accomplished, others still remain plans. Sometimes it is frustrating as I don’t have the time I need to achieve what I would like to.
This week has been even more strenuous as I have commenced another year of online study. It is a three year bachelors degree, and as I was new to the university world it was quite daunting.
This year I have decided to put in a strict timetable to help me through my final year of studies. I have tried this in the past before and failed but being in my final year I did not want to finish my degree in a lack lustre way.
Planning is essential if you want to achieve your goals. As I am studying from home keeping a strict routine is imperative in guiding me to achieve these goals. Here are my top tips in helping you achieve your online studying or any type of studying that is!
1) Before you start look through your course study guide and check for due dates for assignments essays and exams as well as reading the requirements for the course and any procedures that must be followed. Note down the required textbooks or any other materials you may need.
2) Note down important due dates in a dairy. I like to keep a dairy specifically for my studying. Also keep a yearly calendar somewhere visible where you can write these dates down that way you can see at a glance when assignments and lessons are due and if any clash.
3) Make a lesson plan and decide what days or times are suitable for studying and put them in a timetable format, like the ones you had in high school. For example I have four subjects this semester so I have set out four mornings in the week from 9 am to 12 pm to be my studying times. Keep in mind any online tutorial lessons you may have with your teacher and any lessons you need to complete beforehand. I have an online tutorial for accounting every Wednesday night, so I have scheduled Monday morning to study my accounting lesson so I have completed all the required activities beforehand. Keep in mind to include all your other daily activities in the time table so that you can follow a routine.
4) Allocate a place in your home that can be your study area. Try to pick somewhere that is quiet and away from distractions such as the television. Keep your study materials in that area so that way you have a “place to go” to study.
5) Allow for one free day if possible away from your studying to allow you to enjoy free time or catch up on other non study related items. Make sure you stop for snack and lunch breaks, write them into your timetable and try to stop for a break at the same time if possible everyday that way it will be part of your routine.
6) Prep meals on the weekend if possible that way you don’t have to waste time during the week. You can just simple heat up the meal and eat it. Try and stick to nutrious meals that allow for plenty of vitamins and minerals as these are essential to your concentration levels.
7) Lastly keep a simple notebook with you whenever possible to note things down as you go along. Quite often you will get a brilliant idea for an assignment while you are doing something else. Writing it down when you first thought of it will keep the idea fresh. Keep to do lists and all ongoing rough notes in this book so that you can reference back to it if you need to. I keep an exercise book with me and write down all my ideas for study and other things, also my recipes and blog ideas and to do list.
